Communities to celebrate Fourth of July

ESCANABA — Communities across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will celebrate Independence Day weekend with parades, fireworks, festivals and other festivities as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.

BARK RIVER

The public is invited to attend Bark River’s Fourth of July celebration on Saturday, sponsored by the Bark River Lions and Heart of the North Lions. The celebration will kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. EST. The line up will be by Ray’s Feedmill, and 50/50 raffle tickets will be sold in advance along the parade route up until the start of the parade. Parade prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.

Food and refreshments will be served by the Bark River Lions & Heart of the North Lions at the Bark River Sports Complex starting at noon. Attendees can enjoy a children’s bounce house and obstacle course, a fire department display and slushies. A tug-of-war will commence at 1:30 p.m. between North & South Bark River, and a pie and ice cream social will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The Peltier Brothers will also provide live entertainment from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Observers to the parade and holiday festivities must bring their own lawn chair to the festivities. Fireworks are scheduled for dusk. For more information, call 906-466-7422.

ESCANABA

The Fourth of July celebration in Escanaba will take place Saturday at Ludington Park and the Escanaba Municipal Marina.

According to the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the celebration is currently scheduled to include the Ludington Street Car Show at 10 a.m.; Patriotic Polka Party in the Park at the Karas Bandshell from 4 to 7:30 p.m.; the Escanaba City Band at 8:30 p.m.; and fireworks at dusk.

Music for the Patriotic Polka Party in the Park will be provided by The Mix, a polka group based in Pulaski, Wisconsin. In the event of unfavorable weather, the music will be moved to the Escanaba Marketplace, 1501 Ludington St.

Attendees can also view Jaws of Life and K9 demonstrations, as well as food and tent vendors throughout the day. The event is presented by the DDA and Kivioja & Van Effen, CPAs.

FELCH TOWNSHIP

The Fourth of July parade will begin at noon Saturday on 14th Avenue and ends at the Community Center. Line-up starts at 11 a.m.

Fireworks will conclude the Felch festivities at dusk Saturday at the Felch Community Center.

GLADSTONE

The City of Gladstone’s annual Fourth of July celebration is set to kick off at 11 a.m. with the Gladstone parade, which will begin on Delta Avenue, turn left onto 13th Street and conclude along Lake Shore Drive near the ball field.

This year’s parade theme is “Happy 250th Birthday America,” and the public is invited to vote for their favorite float. Following the parade, the community is invited to gather at Van Cleve Park to enjoy meals from food truck vendors while listening to the sounds of local bands, including Chasey Gibbs and Chad Williams, Big Al & the Tomatas and Chad Borgen and The Collective.

Bounce houses, obstacle courses, bubble soccer, balloons and a dunk tank will also be featured. Fireworks will be launched from the Gladstone Pier at dusk.

The Gladstone-Rapid River Kiwanis Fran Cannon Firecracker Run/Walk will take place Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Gladstone Pavilion. The event will consist of a two-and-a-half-or five-mile run and a two-and-a-half-mile walk. There will also be a one-mile fun run for kids sponsored by OSF Healthcare. HERMANSVILLE

Hermansville will celebrate the Fourth of July on Saturday with a parade, family activities, live entertainment and fireworks.

The children’s parade begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the main parade sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion Post 340. Parade registration and lineup for participants starts at 10:45 a.m. near Stewart Manufacturing, while children should line up by the Sportsman’s Club.

Prizes will be awarded for the best floats, along with the best-decorated classic car, motorcycle and ORV.

Festivities continue at Hermansville Lake and Park from noon to 6 p.m. and include food, refreshments, music, games and bounce houses. The Descendents of Hermansville will provide live entertainment throughout the afternoon. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. No carry-in beverages will be permitted.

Park activities are sponsored by the William Anderson Sportsman’s Club, while the American Legion Post 340 will conduct a 50-50 raffle at the lake.

The Hermansville Mud Bogs begin at 12:30 p.m. at the William Anderson Sportsman’s Club, with registration from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and cash payouts in each event.

The IXL Historical Museum will host a special dedication starting at 11:45 a.m. The museum will offer self-guided tours with live blacksmith demonstrations from noon to 4 p.m.

Additional events include the Rusty Nuts Car Club’s annual Car and Bike Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds, with registration from 8 a.m. to noon and trophy presentations at 2 p.m. The museum will also have vintage logging equipment on display.

The Curious Pig food truck and Flavor Blast ice cream/shaved ice truck will be on site. The Back Forty Axe Throwing will offer additional entertainment. Donations will be appreciated. The Vietnam Veterans Museum also will be open during the afternoon.

The celebration concludes with a fireworks display at dusk, sponsored by the Hermansville Fireworks Committee.

IRON MOUNTAIN-KINGSFORD

The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Independence Day parade is set to step off at 9 a.m. Saturday. This year’s themes are “Celebrating America250” and “Wild West.”

The parade will once again start at the corner of Balsam/Woodward, head east down Woodward and turn left onto Carpenter Avenue, and right on H Street to conclude in front of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 of Iron Mountain will host a cookout immediately after the parade Friday at the post at 916 River Ave. in Iron Mountain. They will serve brats, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, chips and beverages. Children ages 12 and younger with a paying adult will receive free hot dogs and ice cream.

The Sons of the American Legion Post 50 in Iron Mountain has planned a special fireworks show in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The production is set to take place at dusk on Independence Day from Millie Hill on Iron Mountain’s east side.

In case of rain, the fireworks will be rescheduled to Sunday. Any updates to changes will be posted on the city of Iron Mountain’s website and Facebook pages.

MANISTIQUE

The City of Manistique, in partnership with the Independence Day Committee, will host its annual Independence Day celebration this weekend.

Festivities will begin Friday with a Kiddie Parade at 6 p.m. Line up begins at 5:30 p.m. at the post office. The annual Independence Day parade will take place Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. Line up begins at 3rd Street at noon.

This year’s parade theme is “Celebrating 250 Years – Happy Birthday, America!” Prizes will be given for the best music, most patriotic and most creative floats.

The weekend-long celebration will conclude Sunday at dusk with a fireworks display at the Manistique City Marina.

The Indian Lake Regatta’s sailing event is to return for the Fourth of July, as well, at the Bishop Baraga Shrine Boat Launch on Indian Lake at 2:30 p.m. All sailors and sailboats are welcome. MARQUETTE

Marquette’s Fourth of July celebrations will begin with fireworks launched from the Lower Harbor Ore Dock at dusk on Friday. For the best view, the community is encouraged to find a spot at Mattson Lower Harbor Park.

The Marquette Fireworks Committee, in partnership with the Fresh Coast Light Lab, has also designed a Fourth of July Laser Light Show on the Ore Dock for Saturday at dusk. The new event will allow additional groups of residents, like veterans with PTSD, a sensory-friendly opportunity to participate in the holiday celebrations.

This year also marks the Marquette Kiwanis Club’s 31st year of sponsoring the Marquette July 4th Parade with the City of Marquette, which starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday at McClelland & W. Washington. This year’s parade theme will be “One Nation Indivisible — 250 years.”

Marquette County Exchange Club’s 44th annual Freedom Fest will run over the course of three days: Thursday from 4 to 10:30 p.m.; Friday from noon to 10:30 p.m.; and Saturday from noon to 10:30 p.m. Drawings for a 50/5 raffle will take place each night at 9:30 p.m.

Freedom Fest will feature inflatables, yard games, carnival games, face painting, balloon art, as well as food and craft vendors. A live entertainment schedule can be found at https://marquettefourth.com/freedom-fest/.

POWERS-SPALDING

The annual Powers-Spalding Independence Day festivities will take place Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Powers.

The day kicks off with the “Patriotic” theme parade at 10 a.m., with cash prizes awarded for the best floats. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Lions Club building.

Following the parade, activities will continue at the park with games, food and refreshments. Organizers note that no carry-in food or beverages will be permitted. Live entertainment will be provided by the Larry Pepin Band throughout the afternoon.

The Normenco Sportsmen’s Club will again sponsor a fishing derby from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The WUMPA truck pulls are scheduled to begin at noon, with registration open from 9 to 11 a.m. They will also offer a dunk tank, children’s games and a bounce house sponsored by North Central Area Parent Network, Little League and Youth Wrestling programs.

Tickets for the Lions Club gun raffle will also be available during the celebration. The event is sponsored by the Powers-Spalding Lions Club, Tony Revord American Legion Post 244.
