Kayaker found deceased following search on Green Bay
MENOMINEE – A kayaker was found dead on Green Bay following an overnight search operation.
At approximately 7:37 p.m. on Friday, the Menominee City Police Department received a report of an overdue kayaker.
The individual had launched a kayak into the waters of Green Bay near Veterans Memorial Park that morning and had not returned as expected, according to a news release.
Upon receiving the report, the department initiated an extensive search operation involving officers on foot, drones and marine vessels.
The search led to the discovery of the kayak at 11:46 p.m. Friday after it washed ashore about one mile north of Veterans Memorial Park.
About 35 minutes later, at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, members of the Menominee Fire Department operating a rescue boat found the individual deceased and submerged several hundred yards offshore. The body was subsequently recovered.
The Menominee City Police Department said the incident remains under investigation, and no foul play is suspected at this time.
Police said Saturday that the deceased’s identity was being withheld pending confirmation that next of kin was notified. On Monday, authorities declined to release the identity of the deceased.
The following agencies assisted the Menominee Police Department during the operation: Menominee County 911, Marinette Police Department, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, Menominee Fire Department, Marinette Fire Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, United States Coast Guard and Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office.
