ESCANABA – Bay College proudly announced on Thursday that the State Board of Nursing has officially approved the Practical Nursing (PN) program for reintroduction to the Bay College Escanaba campus.

“This milestone reflects the institution’s continued commitment to expanding high-quality healthcare education and strengthening the regional healthcare workforce,” wrote the college in a press release.

In early 2025, Bay College’s Practical Nursing certificate program was temporarily put on pause after it was discovered the program lacked proper accreditation. Administration at the time said that the issue was “inherited” from previous leaders, and they worked quickly to address the situation.

“Over the past year, the Nursing Program has addressed several challenges with focus and determination. Today, the College celebrates a significant development that positions the program for a strong and sustainable future,” Bay College stated this week.

The first cohort of Practical Nursing students is scheduled to begin in mid-May 2026. The program will equip students with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and clinical preparation required to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). These professionals serve a vital role in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and community health settings. Reintroducing the PN program locally enhances workforce development and improves access to care — especially in rural communities.

“This approval represents an important step forward for our institution and the communities we serve,” said Bay College Dean of Allied Health and Nursing Dr. Patrick Reinhard. “By offering practical nursing education close to home, we are creating pathways to meaningful careers while addressing critical healthcare staffing needs across our region.”

In 2023, the program had a 38.46% completion rate, and 75% of students who went on to take the licensure examination passed successfully, according to statistics on Bay College’s website.

In the coming months, the college will release detailed information regarding admission requirements, application timelines, financial aid opportunities, and upcoming information sessions.

The College extends its gratitude to Senator Ed McBroom for his support and advocacy with the Michigan State Board of Nursing in helping us obtain this approval. The collaboration with community partners, healthcare leaders, faculty, and supporters helped make this achievement possible.

Starting at $3.50/week.
