ESCANABA – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel released a statement Friday following the guilty conviction of Tavaris Jackson.

On Thursday, a jury in the Delta County 47th Circuit Court found Jackson, of Escanaba, guilty of first-degree premeditated murder in the July 2023 killing of 22-year-old Harley Corwin, who was pregnant at the time. The charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

He was also found guilty of one count of assault resulting in the death of a fetus, punishable by up to life imprisonment; and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, a two-year felony.

Nessel commented on the verdict, writing, “While no outcome can undo this devastating loss, I am grateful to the prosecutors who helped secure long-awaited justice in this tragic case. I hope this verdict provides a sense of closure for Harley’s family.”

Michigan Assistant Attorney Generals Caitlin Kirby and Ladonna Logan prosecuted the case.

Nessel’s office noted that while charges were initially filed by the Delta County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Department of Attorney General was appointed to prosecute the case in August 2023.

Jackson will be sentenced on June 2 in the Delta County 47th Circuit Court.

Starting at $3.50/week.
