GLADSTONE – A Gladstone couple has officially taken over ownership of two laundromats: Gladstone Laundromat and McCarthy’s Laundry.
Dawn and Brian Hammond first expressed interest in purchasing the laundromats 12 years ago after giving their business card to the owners at the time, John and Lisa Thomas.
Brian detailed what drew them to the opportunity, saying, “We were looking for another business opportunity that wouldn’t have as many ‘moving parts’ as Oven King Pizza. Not a lot of employees, easy to self-manage and something that didn’t hold us to a set schedule.”
After initially expressing interest in the laundromats, the Hammonds lost contact with the Thomases.
“In the back of our minds, we thought he just threw it out,” said Brian. “We continued throughout the years driving by in hopes to see a realtor sign and, in waiting, watched a lot of YouTube videos and subscribed to some podcasts to ready ourselves for an opportunity.”

After owning the laundromats for 26 years, John Thomas reached out to the Hammonds in July.
“After months of negotiations, red tape and a few hurdles, we closed on January 9th of this year,” Brian added.
When asked what their first updates to the businesses will be, Brian stated, “Our first purchase will be updating a change machine that’s been an ongoing issue. After that, flooring and installing some larger machines, as those are the kind people have been gravitating towards.”
In addition to their new venture, the Hammonds own Oven King Pizza in Escanaba as well as several rental properties. The couple also operates an Airbnb-type vacation rental.
“Dawn and I have lived in Gladstone for 50 years, and we hope to continue the legacy of John and Lisa by offering the customer a safe, clean, working environment,” Brian said. “We are very new to this, but are excited and willing to put in the effort.”
Both laundromats remain open and fully operational, ensuring a smooth transition for customers. Gladstone Laundromat is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, while McCarthy’s Laundry is open 24/7.
