Drug busts in Houghton and Baraga counties

HOUGHTON & BARAGA – After several months of investigation, detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) arrested two men suspected of distributing illegal drugs in Houghton and Baraga counties.

On Thursday, UPSET detectives executed three search warrants at known drug houses and arrested Michael Jestilla, 60, and Bredon Hanks, 27, after seizing over a quarter pound of crystal meth, an ounce of cocaine and user amounts of MDMA and fentanyl.

According to a news release, the first search warrant was executed at a residence in Dollar Bay, Mich. Detectives seized methamphetamine, electronic devices and $650 in cash.

Bredon Hanks, 27, was arrested on charges relating to the distribution of meth and cocaine. He was subsequently lodged in Houghton County Jail.

The second search warrant executed at a residence in Hancock resulted in detectives seizing MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, fentanyl compounds and carfentanil, a powerful synthetic opioid 100 times more potent than fentanyl.

Detectives also seized counterfeit pills, electronic devices and $430 in cash. Jestila, of Houghton County, was arrested for delivery of meth. He was lodged in the Baraga County Jail.

A third search warrant was then executed at a residence detectives believed to be owned by Jestila in Baraga County. User amounts of cocaine and meth were seized.

The total amount of drugs seized hold a street value of over $15,000, according to a news release. The investigation remains ongoing.

Detectives from UPSET were assisted by personnel from the Hancock Police Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police (MSP) Calumet Post, MSP Emergency Support Team, MSP Traffic Safety Team, United States Postal Inspection Service and Michigan Department of Health and Humans Services.
