ESCANABA — Another round of snow in the region gave students and staff at several schools an extra day Monday for their holiday break.

Schools that canceled classes Monday due to conditions included Bark River-Harris, Delta-Schoolcraft ISD, Manistique, Marquette, Gwinn, Superior Central, Big Bay de Noc, Escanaba, Gladstone, Hannahville Indian, Holy Name Catholic, Mid-Peninsula and Rapid River.

The snow started Sunday evening, with an average of 3 to 4.5 inches reported on the ground in the Escanaba area by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Gladstone had an estimated 5.6 inches.

While the snow was enough to make travel difficult, Delta County had no reports of power outages, according to Upper Peninsula Power Company.

This was in contrast to the widespread outages after a major winter storm came through the Midwest and U.P. on Dec. 28-29, leaving roughly a foot of snow in Escanaba and more than 2 feet in some parts of Marquette County.

A light wintry mix of snow and ice could continue to affect the U.P. through today, with a small chance of freezing rain early this morning and a 20% to 40% chance of light freezing rain or snow in the afternoon and evening, according to the NWS.

Starting at $3.50/week.
