Schools closed amidst extreme cold warning
DELTA COUNTY — Schools will be closed on Friday, Jan. 22, due to subzero temperatures and extremely cold wind chills.
The districts of Big Bay de Noc School, Carney-Nadeau Public School, Mid Peninsula School District, Bark River-Harris Schools, Rapid River Public Schools, Escanaba Area Public Schools, Gladstone Area Schools, Manistique Area Schools, North Central Area Schools, Nah Tah Wahsh PSA & Hannahville Indian School all announced that their schools will be closed on Friday.
An extreme cold warning is in effect from 10 p.m. EST Friday evening until 10 a.m. Saturday for the Central Upper Peninsula.
“The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes,” warns the National Weather Service.
Reschedule dates may be announced later for the several high school sports games that have also been cancelled; however, guardians and/or athletes may wish to check with coaches and athletic directors about specific sports, as not all matches have been cancelled, even for closed schools.
For example, Manistique High School is still hosting their varsity boys’ basketball game at 5 p.m. against Negaunee, and Hannahville’s basketball games at Maplewood Baptist are still on for Friday and Saturday.
Escanaba Area Public Schools cancelled their girls’ basketball game and JV wrestling tournament. North Central cancelled all extracurriculars and athletic events for both Friday and Saturday.
The dangerously low wind chills will make the air feel much colder than the actual temperature — which, in Escanaba, is expected to be at a high of 3 degrees below zeroand a low of 15 below zero on Friday.
