ESCANABA — OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba welcomed its first baby of the year Friday — Jackson Wade Courser, a son born to Amber (Smith) Courser and Brandon Courser of Escanaba.

Jackson Wade arrived into the world at 9:14 p.m. Friday, weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches in length. Amber gave birth by caesarean section.

“He’s happy, healthy; we’re all home; mom’s happy, healthy,” Brandon said.

Jackson joins four siblings — three brothers and a sister. Amber and Brandon’s other children are Evan, 18; Riley, 14; Jenessa, 13; and Noah, 3.

The family lives in Soo Hill.

The newborn’s grandparents are Scott Smith and Trena Smith of Westminster, S.C., and Cheryl Sajewski and Phillip Sajewski of Lincoln Park, Mich., on the maternal side; and Larry Courser and Cheryl Russell of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., on the paternal side. Linda Hackett Samson of Hale, Mich., is a great-grandmother.

Many communities celebrate their first baby of the year, which some believe symbolize luck, prosperity and new beginnings. In Escanaba, parents, the local hospital and the newspaper have long taken part in the tradition.

Starting at $3.50/week.
