NAHMA TOWNSHIP — In Friday’s early morning hours, a small house near Nahma was destroyed by fire. The homeowner got out, and no injuries were reported.
It was dark outside and 11 degrees below zero when Delta County Central Dispatch received the call for a fire on 24th Road — with a mailing address technically in Rapid River, but not far from the Nahma Township Fire Hall. It was around 3:30 a.m., and the area’s extreme cold warning had kicked in five hours before.
The Nahma Township Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization, as are several of the other agencies who braved the conditions to respond, including Garden Township Fire and Rescue, Ensign Township Fire Department and the Masonville Township Fire Department.
Michigan State Police and Rampart EMS also assisted on scene.
The blaze was extinguished, and firefighters cleared the scene around 8 a.m., reported Nahma Township Fire Chief Travis Cayemberg.
The structure was a total loss.
