Wet weather could hinder UP travel

Travel could be treacherous in the Upper Peninsula this weekend as the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook affecting most of the region.

Mixed precipitation is expected through 1 p.m. Eastern time today, with total snow and sleet accumulations generally less than an inch.

About 1 to 3 inches of snow is predicted from Houghton to Marquette, while ice accumulations up 0.15 inches are expected along the Wisconsin border.

Another round of wintry mix including rain, freezing rain, and snow is expected Saturday night into Sunday, forecasters said.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” NWS said. “The hazardous conditions could impact post-holiday travel.”

In the Iron Mountain area, highs in the mid-30s are expected today, Saturday and Sunday. Snow is likely Sunday night as temperatures fall.

Monday’s predicted high is 19 and there’s a chance of snow Tuesday.

The outlook for New Year’s Eve is mostly cloudy with a high near 15. The expected low Wednesday night is 3 degrees, while the predicted high for New Year’s Day is 13.

Starting at $3.50/week.
