Mackinac County sheriff warns of jail bond scam

MARQUETTE — Law enforcement warns Upper Peninsula residents about scammers using the phone to seek payment of an inmate’s bond.

“It appears that scammers are reviewing our online inmate app, and calling relatives of recently arrested individuals and demanding money to allow them to get out of jail, for reduced charges, etc.,” a recent news release from Mackinac County Sheriff Edward M. Wilk states.

“Sheriff Wilk would like to remind everyone that no law enforcement personnel will call and demand payment over the phone for release of any of our inmates or any other inmate matters.”

The office asks that anyone who receives a suspicious call regarding making payments over the phone for anything related to a past or current inmate call the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department immediately at 906-643-1911.

Starting at $3.50/week.
