ESCANABA — The Sand Point Lighthouse and the Delta County Historical Museum, both operated by The Delta County Historical Society, welcomed guests Friday afternoon and will again be open from 1 to 4 p.m. today.

The two buildings in Escanaba — the lighthouse, first built in 1867, and the museum, which has operated since 1956 — are usually only open between Memorial Day at the end of May and Labor Day in early September. But for the two days after Christmas, the Historical Society opens its doors to the public so locals and winter visitors may enjoy a unique open house, complete with cookies and cider in the lighthouse kitchen. The special holiday event has been an annual tradition since 1990.

Though the open house is free, donations are accepted and help sustain the premises.

The lighthouse and museum are found on Sand Point in Escanaba — on Water Plant Road, also called Beaumier Way, off the easternmost end of Ludington Street.

Starting at $3.50/week.
