Gladstone Ski Hill opening postponed

GLADSTONE — Though there had been hope the Gladstone Ski Hill at John & Melissa Besse Sports Park might open before Christmas, the present unexpected warm spell has pushed back the opening date.

Snowgun machines — including a third new one — have been making snow at the ski hill since Dec. 5, and with a winter that’s supposed to be colder and snowier than the last couple, the Gladstone Recreation Department is still optimistic this year will be successful, Director Wendy Taavola said.

She explained that right now, the snow is in mounds to preserve it during the warmer temperatures. The ski hill will be groomed after the weather gets reliably below freezing again.

Information about the afterschool program that takes place annually at the ski hill will be released after an opening date is decided.

The ski hill is currently seeking seasonal employees; applications can be found online or at Gladstone City Hall, 1100 Delta Ave.

Starting at $3.50/week.
