Police: Man died in crash at Delta mall

ESCANABA — The driver of a pickup truck that crashed into the rear side of Dunham’s Sports at the Delta Plaza Mall on Sunday died on site, Escanaba Public Safety revealed Wednesday.

The single-vehicle accident happened about 2:46 p.m. east of the entrance to L&M Fleet Supply and behind the bowling alley. According to Escanaba Public Safety’s news release, responding personnel immediately began a medical assessment of the driver, now identified as 54-year-old Kenneth Wyka of Montreal, Wis.

“Despite lifesaving efforts, the gentleman was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the news release states. “The Department of Escanaba Public Safety extends its deepest condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragic incident.”

No one was injured inside the building, which had considerable damage from the collision. The incident remains under investigation, according to EPS.

Delta County Central Dispatch, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Rampart EMS and Gene’s Towing all assisted at the crash. Afterwards, SERVPRO of the Upper Peninsula helped to clean up the damaged building.
