One dead after apartment fire in Kingsford

KINGSFORD — A person died early Saturday in a fire in an apartment building in Kingsford.

Kingsford Public Safety officers on patrol discovered the active structure fire at 229 E. Breitung Ave. about 1:26 a.m. Saturday, Kingsford Public Safety Department Director Brandon Rutter said in a news release.

They evacuated the lower apartment units and began fire suppression. During the response, one victim was found inside the residence and later pronounced dead, Rutter said.

A name has not been released pending family notification.

A state fire investigator was contacted to assist in determining the cause, according to the news release.

KPSD was assisted by Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office dispatch, Iron Mountain Fire Department, Integrity Care Ambulance, Dickinson County deputies, Iron Mountain Police Department, We Energies, DTE and Kingsford Public Works.
