Menominee to limit number of marijuana retail outlets
MENOMINEE — Menominee voters Tuesday overwhelmingly backed capping the number of marijuana retail outlets in the city at nine.
Unofficial results showed 1,429, or 78.04%, voted “yes” to 402, or 21.96%, opposing the proposal.
The vote Tuesday came after Circuit Court Judge Mary Barglind invalidated voters approving the cap in a special election in August, saying Michigan marijuana law requires ballot initiatives be held during the next regular election.
Menominee, on the Michigan-Wisconsin border, has a population of 8,300 people yet eight dispensaries, with two more retail outlets seeking to open.
Menominee City Council seats also were up for vote Tuesday.
In the First Ward, incumbent Michael DeDamos narrowly defeated Donna S. Larsen, 179 to 177. There were four write-in votes. DeDamos was first elected in 2021.
In the Second Ward, Windy-Marie Kerkela beat Beth Peanosky, 268 to 186, for an open seat. There were four write-in votes (.87%).
In the Third Ward, incumbent Josh Jones was unopposed and drew 369 votes; there were 44 write-in votes. Jones has been on the council since 2021.
In the Fourth Ward, Christina Vargo won over incumbent Vincent Baron, 293 to 213. There were two write-in votes. Baron had been on the council since 2022.
