Bay de Noc Unitarians donate to after-school program

ESCANABA — The City of Escanaba’s Recreation Department has received a donation from the Bay de Noc Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for its after-school program at the Catherine Bonifas Civic Center.

The funds will be used to purchase hygiene items, school supplies and food/snacks for the program, the city stated in a news release.

Located at 225 N. 21st St. in Escanaba, the civic center is a multi-purpose facility that was dedicated in 1968 and made possible through benefactions from Catherine Bonifas. The after-school program is open to students in fourth through 12th grades, who can register at no cost to use the center’s gymnasium, game room and other common areas. It is open from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays.

“The after-school program continues to increase in the number of students over the last several years,” Recreation Director Kim Peterson said. “We are grateful for the donations that are received for the program within our community. We appreciate organizations such as the Unitarian Universalist of Bay de Noc for thinking of us in their generosity.”

Bay de Noc Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is an organization whose history in this area dates to 1980. The fellowship has Sunday services and forums at the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center, 700 First Ave. S. in Escanaba.
