Landfill to use grant for discount on recycling electronics, mattresses

Working with a grant from the Hannahville Indian Community, the Delta County Landfill will offer discounted rates for recycling TVs, other electronics and mattresses starting Monday for as long as the funding holds up.

ESCANABA – The Delta County Landfill in Escanaba will take televisions, other electronics and mattresses at a discounted rate starting at 8 a.m. Monday, thanks to a grant from the Hannahville Indian Community.

The recycling event at 5071 19th Ave. N. will go on for several days until the $10,000 grant has been utilized. This opportunity is open to residents but not businesses.

Residents can drop off TVs and computer monitors for $5; electronics such as computers, computer towers, copiers and printers for $2 each; and mattresses and/or box springs for $10 each. Only three items per day will be accepted.

This is a significant discount compared with the usual cost of $20 to $30 to dispose of TVs and computer monitors, $10 for other electronics and $20 for mattresses and/or box springs.

Terri Rabitoy, the recycling event coordinator, applied for the grant from Hannahville Indian Community this spring. Rabitoy has been coordinating recycling events for the past five years, but this is the first TV, electronic and mattress recycling event she has done at the Delta County Landfill.

“By us obtaining the grant money from the Hannahville Indian Community, we are able to offer a much reduced rate for people to recycle these items,” she said.

The landfill also receives funding from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, or EGLE, in the form of a tire grant.

Rabitoy said she has been applying for EGLE tire grants the past couple of years when available. The normal fee is $4 to $6 apiece for tires, but with the grant funds the landfill is able to offer residents a $2 per tire rate for up to 10 per day.

In 2024, the landfill was able to take in a total of 3,729 tires with the funding boost from EGLE. Since July 15 of this year, the landfill has recycled 895 tires.

Rabitoy anticipates a large turnout for this event, as recycling electronics and mattresses can get quite expensive.

“It’s very helpful for people if they can get a break once in a while,” she said.

Hours at the landfill are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays; and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
