ESCANABA – The Delta County Airport in Escanaba will conduct a full-scale emergency exercise, “Operation Northwoods Landing,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, with a “hot wash” debriefing to follow until 4 p.m.
This triennial exercise is a mandatory requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure the Airport’s Emergency Plan is effective and all responding agencies are prepared for a real-world event, Delta County Airport officials stated in a news release.
The scenario will simulate a commercial aircraft emergency. The public may see and hear emergency vehicles and first responders at and around the airport, including the Escanaba Public Safety Department, local fire and EMS teams, and law enforcement.
The exercise will take place on airport property and will not interfere with normal flight operations, including the commercial flight departing at 11:48 p.m.
To ensure safety and allow for a realistic simulation, Runway 10/28, Taxiway B and the Apron will be closed during the exercise period.
This exercise is designed to test the coordination and response capabilities of multiple agencies, including:
— Delta County Airport operations;
— Airport rescue and firefighting;
— Escanaba Public Safety (fire and police);
— Delta County Sheriff’s Office;
— Local EMS and Medical Transport;
— Local hospital emergency services;
— The American Red Cross;
— Ford River Township Fire Department.
This is a training exercise only. There is no danger to the public, according to airport officials, who added, “We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to enhance the safety and security of the Delta County community.”
