Military exercises underway in UP
MARQUETTE — An increased amount of military activity and aircraft in the Upper Peninsula is part of planned training operations and no reason to be alarmed, officials said.
The U.S. Army will began conducting military training Sunday in and around Marquette County and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Those training operations will continue Sunday, Aug. 17, and consist of air mobility operations and ground base close quarter battle training.
The training was announced in a post shared Sunday night by the Marquette County Sherrif’s Office Facebook page. In that post, it was stated that the local terrain provides unique training opportunities and simulates environments troops may encounter when deployed, but it was stressed that the training “is not in response to any real-world events.”
“Robust safety precautions are in place to protect participants and residents, along with significant planning considerations to minimize impact to the community and noises in and around controlled areas of training during the evening and early morning hours. This training was coordinated and approved with the appropriate local officials,” the posting continued.
To maintain the highest level of security, there are no public viewing opportunities planned during the military exercises.
“The U.S. Army is grateful for the support of local officials and the residents of the Upper Peninsula,” the statement released by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department concluded.
