Man arraigned in Escanaba fatal stabbing

ESCANABA — The man accused in a fatal stabbing Aug. 13 in Escanaba was in court this week.

Kaw Tung, 29, was arraigned Wednesday at the Delta County Courthouse on charges of homicide-open murder-statutory short form.

Court records did not indicate his bond. Jennifer J. France is listed as Tung’s attorney.

In Michigan, Tung’s charge of “open murder” indicates the prosecution has chosen not to specify whether the homicide is first-degree, second-degree or manslaughter; instead, the degree of murder will be determined later during the legal proceedings, according to officials.

Tung was also charged with statutory short-form, which is often used in cases with an open murder charge. Officials said statutory short-form is used to state the general nature of the offense rather than determine the exact details.

Few details have been provided on the incident that was reported about 7:18 a.m. Aug. 13 at an undisclosed residence, where a person was pronounced dead on site, according to an Aug. 14 news release from Escanaba Public Safety.

Tung was later taken into custody without incident in another state, according to Escanaba Public Safety.

Online court records indicate Yung made an initial appearance Aug. 15 in Waukesha County in Wisconsin and was picked up Aug. 18 after waiving extradition.

The name of the victim still has not been released and did not appear in the criminal complaint.

Tung is scheduled to return to the 94th District Court in Escanaba on Sept. 4.

Starting at $3.50/week.
