Soggy Saturday douses fireworks plans

Brian Rowell Daily Press. Visitors to Ludington Park enjoy a car show that was part of Independence Day festivities there Saturday. The day ended early after rain and thunderstorms swept through the area starting in late afternoon. Fireworks displays have been rescheduled in both Escanaba and Manistique.
Rain and thunderstorms spoiled Fourth of July celebration plans in two cities locally. Both Manistique and Escanaba had planned Fourth of July celebrations on Saturday — which was actually the 5th of July.
Not to worry — fireworks displays are being rescheduled for Saturday, July 12 in both cities.
Many municipalities such as Gladstone and Bark River opted to have their festivities on July 4th. In this case, that proved to be a wise move. Sunny weather prevailed all day.
Saturday was a different story. Escanaba had festivities planned earlier in the day at Ludington Park including a car show, K-9 police dog demonstrations, bounce houses and other attractions. Those activities went on as planned until rain hit the area about 4 p.m. and lingered on.
Manistique officials said they decided to postpone their fireworks display after speaking with celebration organizers and the company hired for the fireworks show — Great Lakes Fireworks, LLC.
“With the increased possibility of lightning as part of the weather front the decision was made to postpone because of the risk of premature detonation,” said Manistique Public Safety Director Timothy Russell.
Escanaba’s fireworks display will be held at dusk in Ludington Park on Saturday, July 12.
Manistique’s display will also take place on Saturday, July 12 and will be held in conjunction with the 35th Annual Folkfest Celebration.
