Train catches fire near paper mill

R. R. Branstrom | Daily Press Firefighters with the Escanaba Public Safety Department extinguish a fire that burned on an Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad engine midday Friday. Delta County Central Dispatch received a call around 11:45 a.m. that a train was on fire on the tracks along County Road 426 between Bichler Concrete and Bark River Knife. The engineer evacuated as soon as he could. The railroad also put out a few small grass fires that had sparked along the tracks. Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by Escanaba Township Volunteer Fire Department, Wells Township Fire Department, Michigan State Police and the Department of Natural Resources. UP Health System brought an ambulance to the scene and checked on the engineer. At press time, it was unknown whether any injuries were sustained.
