Prisoner death leads to investigation
MARINETTE COUNTY, Wis. — A death investigation is being conducted after a prisoner in police custody died of an apparent overdose.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal
Investigation (DCI) is conducting a death investigation in the Town of Grover, Marinette County, Wis. that occurred on the morning of Wednesday, June 25.
At approximately 12 a.m., a Marinette County deputy initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of County Road B and Poplar Ridge Lane in the Town of Grover, Wis. Upon contacting the occupants of the vehicle, the deputy observed a subject in the driver’s seat who appeared to be ingesting a substance. The subject was taken into custody and became unresponsive shortly thereafter. EMS was contacted, and law enforcement and EMS attempted life saving measures. The subject was transported to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced deceased.
DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.
DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over the
investigative reports to the Marinette County District Attorney’s office when the investigation concludes.
