Teens in custody after high-speed chase
SPALDING TOWNSHIP — Two teens in a vehicle stolen in downstate Michigan were taken into custody Saturday afternoon after a high-speed pursuit in Menominee County.
Hannahville Tribal Police reported about 12:35 p.m. Saturday that a vehicle had fled during a traffic stop, traveling at more than 100 mph and recklessly passing other motorists, according to a news release from the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office.
The pursuit through Harris and Spalding townships ended about 12:42 p.m. when the occupants stopped on County Road 563 and fled into the woods in separate directions.
While the sheriff’s office K-9 and drone teams worked to track the two through the heavily wooded swamps, a nearby resident called in that a male teen was attempting to get into a vehicle on their property, according to the news release.
The 16-year-old male was detained at 2:08 p.m. A drone located the 14-year-old female hiding in the woods a few minutes later.
The incident is being investigated by the Hannahville Tribal Police Department.
The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office worked in conjunction with Hannahville Tribal Police, Menominee Police Department Robotics Unit, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and Menominee County 911 on the incident.
