Plenty of orange cones on area roads this summer

ESCANABA – Delta County will see a lot of orange cones this summer as roughly $4.8 million will be spent on major road projects.
The commission posted a graphic detailing the major road projects for 2025, but there’s much more to be done than what is listed.
“There are a lot of projects going outside of what is listed; there are just too many to list, and it would get very confusing. I can tell you we will spend more money this summer than we have ever spent, ever,” said Delta County Road Commission Manager Jody Norman.
“We are currently looking at $4.8 million in projects for this summer, that does not include mowing, grading, dust control, plowing, culverts, everyday maintenance.”
The major projects will be in six townships:Cornell, Wells, Escanaba, Fairbanks, Garden, and Nahma.
CORNELL
Cornell has two overlay projects: one on County Road 426 (E Road) and one on County Road 523 (Boney Falls H Road).
“(We’re) putting down 1.5″ of fresh blacktop on the road to clean up the cross section, this includes 426 and 523, both starting near the Cornell Hall,” Norman said.
The project is scheduled to start this month and be completed in June.
WELLS
Wells has three projects slated, including paving the Debelak Subdivision, which started this week. Another paving project is scheduled to begin in June on County Road 412 (Danforth 414 to the railroad tracks or the Escanaba City limits. The project is scheduled to be complete in September.
The bridge at County Road 414 (18th Road) will get some maintenance starting in June, repairing concrete in various places as well as painting and weather seals. The project is scheduled for August.
ESCANABA
There are two paving projects in Escanaba Township: one at Lake Bluff 19.4 Road and one at Tipperary Road.
“This will be milling the road surface and placing an overlay on it,” Norman said.
He added that work may also be done on the railroad tracks, time permitting. Prep work or the project begins in July, with paving scheduled for September.
FAIRBANKS
In Fairbanks, an inlay centerline and fog line project at County Road 483 (LL Road) was completed last week.
GARDEN
Two projects are scheduled in Garden: County Road 440 (42.5 Road) and County Road 442 (33rd Road). The project at 33rd Road is an overlay project, running from Highway 13 to the Schoolcraft County line, past Camp 7. Both projects are scheduled for September.
NAHMA
There are two projects scheduled in Nahma, including a joint effort between the commission and the township at L-22 (24th Road).
“We pulverized the road last year, fixed some culverts, and will triple seal it in July,” Norman said.
The commission will also work on County Road 499 (EE.25 Road), adding a single seal to the pavement. The work is scheduled for July.
Project dates are approximate and subject to change.
