Music dominates local slate of events in June
ESCANABA — June brings a slate of events to Escanaba as residents and visitors alike look forward to the approach of summer.
“Lunch on Ludington,” a music series held at the Escanaba Marketplace (at the corner of Ludington and 15th Streets), occurs on Wednesdays, just a couple hours before the space reverts to the home of the farmers’ market. The music — from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — scheduled for June is Whiskey Ryan on the 4th, The Lark Brothers on the 11th, The Make-Believe Spurs on the 18th, and George Sailer and Bill Sjoquist on the 25th.
The Escanaba farmers’ market takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m on Saturdays. Another “pop-up” market will occupy the marketplace on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning June 13.
“Live on the Lawn” is another lunchtime music event, this one held at the Escanaba Public Library (400 Ludington St.). On June 19, saxophonist Patrick Booth will play from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wildman’s food truck will be on site, but guests may also bring their own lunch to enjoy on the lawn. Music moves indoors in the event of rain.
“Music Mondays” are evening shows held at Ludington Park’s Karas Bandshell from 7 to 9 p.m. Scheduled to play in June are The Grand Design Band on the 2nd, Kind of Blues on the 9th, Boots and Sandals on the 16th, Winging’ It on the 23rd, and the Peltier Brothers on the 30th. Food trucks accompany the sounds.
On Wednesday evenings, boat races hosted by the Escanaba Yacht Club take to the bay, beginning near the harbor mouth at 7 p.m. The best vantage point for spectators is from the tip of Sand Point — past the lighthouse, at the eastern end of Water Plant Road. In June, the races fall on the 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th.
Beginning June 18, Escanaba City Band concerts also take place on Wednesday nights. From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., the band that celebrated its 100th anniversary last year delivers its Wednesday night performances from the Karas Bandshell in Ludington Park.
June 21 is “Make Music Day” internationally, and this year, Escanaba is joining in on the tradition. The objective is to have multiple groups of musicians playing at various spots in celebration of the summer solstice, which technically falls on the 20th. On the 21st — a Saturday — a barbershop chorus, students from Jim’s Music, employees of Elmer’s County Market, Esky Baroque and others will contribute by singing and playing at the marketplace, Elmer’s, the Escanaba Public Library, The Church Brewery and more.
On June 28, the Log Jam Festival, new this year, will close part of Ludington Street east of 10th Street for a series of musical performances, lumberjack contests, demonstrations, vendors and a flapjack eating contest.
All the above events are free to attend.
Other June events in Escanaba, including those below, require admission or are affiliated with businesses.
Upper Hand Brewery will be hosting live outdoor music Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings. The first performance will be on the first of the month from 2 to 5 p.m. by Jakey Thomas.
On June 7 and 8, the second annual U.P. Pet Festival hosted by D&D Dog Dynamics brings together activities, shows and vendors to the U.P. State Fairgrounds. There will be demonstrations from the Bay de Noc Kennel Club and working K9s.
Monster Truck Throwdown, which holds events around the country, will be at the U.P. State Fairgrounds on June 14.
Northwoods Motor Mayhem, featuring a car show, vendors, live music, tractor pulls, a burnout contest and mini-bike races, will return to the fairgrounds June 20 and 21. The event is presented by the Gladstone Lions Club.
