Local farmers markets prepare to open for summer season

As the weather continues to warm up and the summer season fast approaches, local farmers markets are opening around the area, ready to provide local goods to the community.

Those looking for fresh vegetables, locally sourced jellies or handmade crafts can visit the different area farmers markets. Some markets have kicked off their season already while others prepare to open.

ESCANABA

The Escanaba Farmers Market opens on Wednesday, June 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. It will run every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. until the end of October.

Highlights at this time of year are rhubarbs, asparagus, homemade brownies, homemade bread, hand-made crafts and more. The market is located at 1501 Ludington Street in Escanaba.

GLADSTONE

The Gladstone Farmers Market begins on June 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. It will run every Monday through September from 3 to 6 p.m. in downtown Gladstone at the Market Square located at 907 Delta Avenue. RAPID RIVER

The Rapid River Farmers Market is already open, with the first day on May 12. It will be open every Monday and Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., located at Cole Street in Rapid River.

Highlights include homemade jams, maple syrup, fresh bagels and more.

MANISTIQUE

The Manistique Farmers and Artisan Market opened on May 28. It will be open every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. until October 30. It is located at Triangle Park/Oak Street/Arbutus Avenue in Manistique.

On rainy days, the market moves indoors to Lake Effect Arts at 244 South Cedar Street. Highlights are gourmet pies, starter plants, mini loaf cakes and more. For more information, visit its Facebook page at Manistique Farmers Market.
