Food truck now at Stonehouse fire scene

RR Branstrom Daily Press A food truck at the site of the former Stonehouse restaurant is open for business.

ESCANABA — There was excitement at the corner of Ludington Street and Lincoln Road on Thursday, as a business that hadn’t operated since the restaurant burned down in December returned in the form of a shiny yellow food truck bearing the familiar name: “STONEHOUSE.”

The menu, while much smaller than what the full restaurant could offer, will feature some recognizable items. Choices on Thursday were the prime rib sandwich, shrimp tacos, chicken Caesar salad, creamy wild mushroom soup, steak au poivre, and cheesecake. But that will likely rotate based on the day.

“We’re gonna pick our favorites out,” said Matt Romps.

Food is delivered to Bay College, prepared in the kitchen there, and then brought to the food truck.

The vehicle now painted yellow and parked in the Stonehouse lot, receiving a steady flow of anxious lunchtime visitors Thursday, was purchased from Wiles Food Service, confirmed Matt Wiles, who said he also helps with food prep.

There isn’t a set schedule; hours will flex. Owners recommended checking the Facebook regularly for updates.

This mobile Stonehouse is utilizing WiFi and the Heartland payment system, said John Romps Jr. Orders may be paid for by cash, card — and yes, Stonehouse gift cards.

“We weren’t gonna open without taking gift cards,” the owners said.

The ultimate goal is to build a new restaurant, and John said they’re working towards it but don’t have details to share yet.

Starting at $3.50/week.
