Township, city races on the ballot
ESCANABA — A number of local races will be presented to residents across Delta County Tuesday. Here’s a look at what’s on the ballot.
GLADSTONE CITY COMMISSION
Three familiar faces are on the ballot to fill out the remainder of a partial term on the Gladstone City Commission that will end Dec. 31, 2025.
On the ballot are Stephen O’Driscoll, who currently holds the seat through an appointment, Steve Viau and Mike O’Connor.
Viau previously sat on the commission after being elected to a partial term in a special recall election in 2015. He failed to secure reelection in 2017.
O’Connor also previously served on the commission. He was elected in 2015 and unexpectedly resigned from the commission in September of 2016 after being asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement related to the termination of the city’s manager.
Both Viau and O’Connor have remained in the public eye since leaving the city commission. Viau currently serves as the Delta County Commissioner for District 2, but failed to defeat his primary challenger, Pat Johnson. O’Connor has primarily remained in the public eye as a frequent litigator against the city of Gladstone.
ESCANABA TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE
Three candidates are vying for two open seats on the Escanaba Township Board. The open seats are currently held by Alfred Gareau (D) and Norm Fleury (R), who was knocked out of contention for the seat due to an unsuccessful attempt to challenge Township Supervisor Tom Rymkos (R) in the August primary.
Gareau is seeking reelection to the seat. Also seeking seats are Republicans Ann LaBumbard and Paul Neumier, both of whom have served on the township’s planning commission.
MAPLE RIDGE TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE
Four candidates are seeking two open seats as trustees on the Maple Ridge Township Board. The seats are currently held by William Toyra (D) and Judy Trudell (R), both of whom are seeking re-election.
In addition to Toyra and Trudell, Sandra Beauchamp (R) and Brenda Henning (no party affiliation) are seeking seats on the board.
MASONVILLE TOWNSHIP
Two candidates have thrown their hat in the ring for the position of Masonville Township’s Supervisor. The position is currently held by Doug Curry, who is not seeking reelection.
Appear on the ballot will be Travis Cary and Wendy Holzenkamp. Neither candidate is affiliated with a party.
BAY COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
All Delta County residents will be able to vote on who should serve on the Bay College Board of Trustees, which has two open seats. The two seats are currently held by Terri Mileski and Dennis Hopkins, both of whom are seeking reelection.
Also seeking a seat is Steven Soderman.
BARK RIVER-HARRIS BOARD OF EDUCATION
Three candidates are seeking election to the two open seats on the Bark River-Harris Board of Education. The seats are currently held by Board Member Bill Schmitt and Board Vice President Melissa Kemppainen, both of whom are seeking reelection. The third candidate seeking election to the board is Jeanette Peltier.
ESCANABA BOARD OF EDUCATION
Four candidates are seeking election to the Escanaba Area Schools Board of Education Tuesday. The three seats open seats are currently held by Board President Jim Beauchamp, Board Secretary Jennifer Johnson-Reeves, and Board Trustee Dan Flynn. All three candidates are seeking reelection.
The sole challenger in the Escanaba school board race is LeeAnne Oman. Oman is perhaps best known for her vote not to certify the May 7 Delta County Board of Commissioners recall election while serving as a Republican alternate on the Delta County Board of Canvassers. Oman resigned from her alternate position with the board of canvassers on June 13.
GLADSTONE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Six candidates are seeking three open positions on the Gladstone Area Schools Board of Education. The open seats are held by Board President Steve Tackman, Board Trustee Jesse Seger and Board Trustee Phil DeMay, all of whom are seeking reelection.
Challenging the three currently-seated candidates are Diane Godfrey, John Malnar, and Steve Viau. Malnar and Viau are both well-known for their time on the Delta County Board of Commissioners, where Malnar currently serves as the board chair and Viau serves as a commissioner.
Viau was knocked off the board of commissioners in the August primary election and will leave the board at the end of the year. He is also running Tuesday for the Gladstone City Commission, on which he previously served.
