Marijuana dispensaries could have future in Manistique

MANISTIQUE – The City of Manistique could soon have multiple dispensaries within the city limits.

On Sept. 23, the Manistique City Council was introduced to the marijuana and zoning ordinance. If passed, the ordinance would allow for up to three dispensaries within the city limits of Manistique.

The ordinance will be back before the council on Oct. 15, where members can make changes, reject or approve the ordinance as is.

Manistique City Manager Corey Barr said administration has been working on an ordinance for several months.

He explained that when the law was enacted to allow dispensaries into local communities, the city decided to opt out and not let them within the city limits.

Barr and others presented a new ordinance to allow dispensaries to operate within the city, but only dispensaries.

“It’s a dispensary-only ordinance so it wouldn’t allow the vehicle stock (transportation), it wouldn’t allow a grow operation. It would be dispensary only,” Barr explained.

According to the current draft of the ordinance, dispensaries can only operate in a B2 General Business zoned district through an approved conditional use permit.

According to Barr, it is still to be determined where the community in Manistique stands on the ordinance.

“We’ve had very little feedback so far,” he said.

“It’s hard to gauge, you know, next Tuesday, are we going to fill the council chambers? It’s possible,” he said.

The council and administration will discuss the agenda item at its next meeting on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. inside the Manistique City Hall Council Chambers.

Starting at $3.50/week.
