Bigger police presence in Manistique schools after vague, threatening texts

MANISTIQUE — Officials in Manistique determine there is no credibility in vague/threatening texts sent to a student there.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, Manistique Area Schools and the School Resource Officer (SRO) were notified of a suspicious text received by a student. The text message made a vague reference to a possible threat towards a school.

The investigation determined that the text was sent utilizing a spoofing application and the number came from outside the local area.

Manistique Director of Public Safety, Tim Russel explained that spoofing applications allow a person or program to create a fake number or email to make it seem like the message is coming from a trusted source.

“The public is reminded that each threat, no matter how credible, will be treated with the utmost urgency by local law enforcement,” Russel said in a press release.

He added that the public can assist by reporting any information to local law enforcement and to refrain from sharing information on social media platforms.

“Sharing such information on social media negatively affects the progress of the police investigation along with creating feelings of fear and unrest for the students,” Russel said.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving Manistique Area Schools, Schoolcraft County Sheriff Department School Resource Officer, Department of Homeland Security, Manistique Public Safety, and Michigan State Police.

“In an effort to make both parents and students feel safe and supported, there will be a more concentrated presence by Manistique Public Safety officers within our area schools for the next several days,” Russel said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
