Body of kayaker missing over a year found in Lake Superior
ONTONAGON — The body of a man who has been missing since last year was found by state police.
On Sept. 24, the Michigan State Police (MSP) reported that the body of Dale Venema, 74, of Ontonagon, was recovered from Lake Superior on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Venema went missing last summer on July 14 while kayaking on Lake Superior.
The Ontonagon County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity through dental records.
MSP wants to thank and recognize the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department, the Ontonagon County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office, Negaunee Regional Communication Center, United
States Coast Guard, US Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit, Bruce’s Legacy Search and Recovery, the Ontonagon Harbor Master and the Village of Ontonagon employees for their efforts in the search and recovery of Venema.
“We would also like to thank the residents and visitors of Ontonagon who provided information that helped lead to this recovery. Our condolences and prayers remain with the family,” MSP said in a press release.
