Schoolcraft voters weigh posts, millages
MANISTIQUE — During the primary election in Schoolcraft County on Tuesday, in addition to selecting preferred candidates for Senator and State Representative, voters will also be presented with names of those running for local seats and — depending on township of residence — proposals regarding taxation.
The following positions and issues will appear on Aug. 6.
COUNTY COMMISSIONER
Republican residents of Schoolcraft County’s 2nd District in Manistique City and Manistique Township will see both currently-sitting Commissioner Bruce Birr and challenger Isaac R. Swisher on the ballot for a four-year term.
It is the only contested position on the commission in the primary.
GERMFASK TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR
The term of the present Germfask’s township supervisor, Republican Abby Burton, expires in November. Republicans will get to choose between two potential successors: John Barker, Jr., and Kurt Hogue. No Democrats are on the ballot for this position, so who will be the next township supervisor will likely be decided in this race.
MUNISING PUBLIC SCHOOLS MILLAGE
A sinking fund millage is proposed for residents within the Munising Public Schools district, which includes parts of Alger and Schoolcraft Counties — but in Schoolcraft, only Hiawatha Township.
The sinking fund would be for ten years for the construction and repair of school buildings, security improvements, technology upgrades, student transportation vehicles and maintenance equipment. If passed, the levy could be up to 1.5 mills ($1.50 per each $1,000 of taxable value) from 2024 to 2033.
MUELLER TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE
Both current trustees in Mueller Township — Democrat Linda L. Hamill, who has held her seat for decades, and Republican Sam Pfeiffer, who is completing a four-year term — will be vacating their positions in November. While only two will ultimately fill the roles, Republicans may choose from four in the primary: Matthew Fischer, Holly Lee, Megan Sivrais and Michel J. Terrill.
There are no Democrats running for the positions.
THOMPSON TOWNSHIP FIRE MILLAGE
A proposal is put to residents of Thompson Township, asking whether they would accept a millage of one mill ($1 for each $1,000 of taxable value) from 2025 to 2032 specifically for the purchase and maintenance of new and used equipment for fire control through the Thompson Township Volunteer Fire Department.
