Backpacker dies while hiking in Isle Royale

HOUGHTON — A female backpacker from downstate Michigan died late Monday afternoon while hiking near Lake LeSage in Isle Royale National Park.

The 37-year-old from Battle Creek was hiking with her partner when she experienced a sudden medical emergency. As her condition deteriorated, she was eventually unable to walk, lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Attempts to resuscitate her with CPR were unsuccessful.

Other backpackers in the area were able to contact Michigan State Police through a delayed 911 text. That information was then relayed to a National Park Service dispatch center. Park ranger/EMTs located and stayed with the party Monday evening. Early Tuesday, a crew of Isle Royale staff transported the party from a remote location.

Starting at $3.50/week.
