Officials investigating cause of semi crash on M-35
PERKINS — Investigation is underway into the semi truck crash that closed down part of the M-35 on Tuesday.
At roughly 3:55 a.m., a call came in concerning a semi truck that veered off the roadway and flipped over into a ditch on the M-35 between Rock and Perkins near Trombley 35th Road. It was a one-vehicle accident with minor injuries reported to the driver of the semi. The truck was carrying up to 8,000 gallons of diesel when the crash occurred. It is still not known how many gallons of oil were spilled in the ditch. It is also unknown what caused the crash.
Sergeant Timothy Oliver of Michigan State Police said that the troopers who responded to the scene are still actively investigating the crash.
Multiple agencies and organizations respond to assist with the wreck including the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Tri-Township Fire Department, Brampton Township Volunteer Fire Department, EGLE and UP Environmental.
The roadway where the spill occurred was closed both north and south until just before 4 p.m.
The semi was towed away from the scene by Gene’s Towing and Recovery.
Delta County Emergency Management Coordinator, Paul Geyer said the spill was not massive, but cleanup is required.
“It’s not a huge spill, but there will be soil that has to be taken out and disposed of,” Geyer said.
