Man faces life in prison for Molotov cocktail incident

MENOMINEE — A Menominee man was arraigned this week on charges of terrorism and assault with intent to murder after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at people sitting on a porch.

According to court documents and information provided in open court, Menominee Police Department officers were dispatched to a home at 1236 West Drive in the city of Menominee for a “fire bomb” complaint. Officers determined a Molotov cocktail had been thrown at the residence while two individuals were sitting on the home’s back porch and another person was inside. The resulting fire was extinguished with a garden hose by one of the victims, who reported he “felt the heat (from the explosion) on his face and smelled fumes.”

A neighbor provided video surveillance footage to police, which showed a man throwing the Molotov cocktail. The neighbor recognized the perpetrator as “Frankie,” who officers later identified as Frank Samuelle Buelteman, 45, of Menominee. Buelteman was quickly located in a shed at 2112 11th Avenue and arrested.

At the time of his arrest, Buelteman was wearing the same green pants as shown in the surveillance video. Additional distinctive items of clothing were found and seized, in addition to a container of gasoline.

Buelteman was arraigned Monday before Judge Robert J. Jamo in 95-A District Court on one count of terrorism, three counts of assault with intent to murder, and three associated felonies. The terrorism and assault with intent to murder charges are each punishable by life or any number of years in prison. Bond was set at $250,000, cash or surety.

Attorney William Hougeboom was appointed to represent Buelteman. A probable cause conference has been set for July 1 at 8:15 a.m., with a preliminary examination to follow on July 22 at 8:30 a.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
