Man dies following ATV crash

THOMPSON TOWNSHIP — A 33-year-old Chicago man died Sunday as a result of an ATV accident in Thompson Township.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost were dispatched to the crash on Hemlock Trail at approximately 8:15 p.m., following a 911 call. Upon arriving at the scene, troopers discovered an ATV had overturned after losing control and ejecting both the driver and a passenger. The ATV then rolled over the driver, causing life-threatening injuries.

Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene. The driver was transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital by Manistique EMS, where he was pronounced dead.

The 11-year-old passenger, who police say was the driver’s niece, suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. Neither the driver nor the girl were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The name of the victim has not yet been released, and the crash remains under investigation. Assisting at the scene were Manistique Public Safety and the Sault Tribal Police Department.
