Vehicle involved in fatal crash was passing ambulance

WELLS TOWNSHIP — A vehicle involved in a fatal head-on crash Monday was passing an ambulance and crashed into another vehicle parked on the side of the highway, Michigan State Police at the Gladstone Post said.

At approximately 3:50 p.m., troopers responded to US-2 and 41 near E & K Auto Repair in Wells Township for a report of a crash involving two pickup trucks.

After further investigation, it was learned an ambulance with Rampart EMS was heading west on US-2 and 41 with its’ emergency lights and sirens activated when a Chevrolet Silverado driving at a high rate of speed attempted to pass the ambulance. The truck then struck a parked Dodge Ram on the shoulder of the roadway that was yielding for the emergency vehicle.

As a result of the crash the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 35-year-old man from Escanaba, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing, troopers said. Reckless driving and failure to yield for an emergency vehicle are factors in the crash.

Troopers were assisted on scene by Escanaba Public Safety Police and Fire, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Victims Service Unit, and Rampart EMS.
