Recall election voter forum is Tuesday

ESCANABA — Delta County League of Women Voters will be hosting a voter forum featuring candidates in the upcoming Delta County Board of Commissioners recall election. There will not be a audience at the forum, however.

The Delta County League of Women Voters (DCLWV) is holding the forum in partnership with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at Escanaba City Hall.

The LWV cited the “special nature of a recall election and space limitations” as reasons the forum will be closed to the public.

“LWV and AAUW recognize the high interest in this election and are providing public participation in other ways,” the group stated.

Delta County Board of Commissioners meetings have gained a reputation of being unusually unruly and disorderly with people being removed from the meetings on several occasions.

The three county commissioners under recall will face off against their challengers on May 7. Commissioner Bob Petersen (R) will face challenger Matthew Jensen (no party affiliation) for the District 5 seat, Commissioner Dave Moyle (R) will face off against Kelli Van Ginhoven (D) for the seat representing District 4, and Commissioner Bob Barron (R) will face challenger Myra Croasdell (no party affiliation) for District 3.

The public will be able to live-stream the forum on Spectrum channel 191, as well as on the City of Escanaba website https://www.youtube.com/@cityofescanaba2710/streams. In addition, the forum will be recorded and posted to the League’s face book page www.facebook.com/DeltaCountyLeagueofWomenVoters and website www.lwvdeltacounty.org.

“We will conduct this forum in our normal manner. Introductions by the moderator, open and closing remarks and one-minute responses. The normal rules will apply for the candidates,” the LWV stated in a press release.

The public is encouraged to submit questions by emailing them to: lwv.delta.2024forum@gmail.com prior to the forum on 4/23 or during the forum. We will be actively watching for questions during the forum. Screeners will be onsite to view the questions and submit them for responses as is our normal procedure.

The League provides a free, non- partisan, on-line Voter Guide at Vote411.org. Here you can see what is on your ballot, find your polling location, read responses to questions posed to candidates by the Delta County LWV and much more.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 7. No early voting is available as this is a local special election.

“The City of Escanaba’s decision to allow a community organization to host an event, or to allow a link to the City’s website, should not be construed as an implied endorsement by the City of Escanaba,” the LWV stated in a press release.
