IRON RIVER -- Gregory Dierkes, 80, who had just purchased his home in Iron River after moving from Florida, has been identified as the man killed in the Saturday night explosion at the house, Iron River Police said.
At approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies from the Iron County Sheriff's Department and troopers from the Michigan State Police, Iron Mountain Post, were dispatched to an explosion at 820 Cayuga St. in the City of Iron River. Upon arrival, officers found the residence mostly destroyed with debris scattered as far as three blocks away. Iron River City Fire Department and several other fire departments from Iron and Dickinson Counties were called to the scene.
While authorities do not suspect criminal activity at this time, the fire remains under investigation. The Iron River City Police is leading the investigation with assistance from the Michigan State Police fire investigator.
