Man suffers serious burns in Manistique garage fire

MANISTIQUE — A man suffered serious burns in a garage fire Monday afternoon, according to the Manistique Public Safety Department.

The blaze occurred at a detached garage at 418 N. Houghton Ave. in Manistique.

At approximately 12:21 p.m. Manistique EMS was dispatched for a report of a man who had sustained serious burns at a Houghton Avenue residence. Minutes later firefighters from Manistique Public Safety and the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the same location for a residential garage on fire. Manistique EMS staff approaching the scene advised seeing a small column of smoke in the response area.

When EMS personnel arrived it was confirmed that a man had sustained serious burns. The individual was stabilized and immediately transported by ambulance to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Fire personnel upon arriving determined the incident was located at 418 N. Houghton Avenue. The address had been initially reported to dispatch as 430 N. Houghton Avenue. The garage was detached from the residence and was located directly behind the home.

Arriving firefighters could see heavy smoke and flames coming from inside the garage. Firefighters from Manistique Public Safety and the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department immediately attacked the fire. The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the detached garage.

All fire personnel cleared the scene at approximately 2:30 p.m. There were no injuries to firefighters or support personnel.

Manistique Public Safety received assistance at the scene from the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, Cloverland Electric, and SEMCO Energy.

As of this time, no further information is available about the man who was transported by EMS to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
