Man dies after falling through the ice near Days River

ESCANABA -- More people fell through the ice into Little Bay de Noc this weekend in two separate incidents, including one that left a man dead.
The first incident took place Saturday. At 6:25 a.m., Delta County Central Dispatch received a call about a four-wheeler that had gone through the ice, leaving two people in the water. Both people were able to get themselves out of the water and back to shore, where they declined medical treatment.
The second incident took place Sunday. Delta County Central Dispatch received a call at 8:43 p.m. that indicated multiple people had gone through the ice on snowmobiles and were in the water.
Responders at the scene were able to locate the people about a mile south of the mouth of the Day's River. There were six individuals in the party, with four of them going through the ice. First responders were able to pull the four individuals out of the water, but one of the individuals was unresponsive.
Life saving measures were administered at the scene, and the man was taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Delta County Sheriff's Office has identified the man as 44-year-old James Massey Jr. from South Carolina.
The other three subjects that fell through the ice were treated and released from OSF.
The rescue was a joint effort between the Delta County Sheriff's Office, Delta County Search and Rescue, Delta County Dive Team, Delta County Central Dispatch, Gladstone Public Safety, Ensign Township Fire Department, Masonville Township Fire Department, Rampart EMS, and the Michigan State Police.
On Monday afternoon, a man was also rescued on the ice off of Fayette State Park. The man became stranded on the ice after it became separated from shore by open water.
