Man bound over for shooting in-law

ESCANABA -- An Escanaba Township man who shot his ex-father-in-law was bound over to circuit court this week on a single charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation.

Jacob Cronick, age 28 of 8311 County Road 416 J Road, was at his home on Jan. 21 when a group of men came to his home with his ex-wife Alexandria Parrotta to pick up some of Parrotta's personal property. One of those men was Parrotta's father, Eric Parrotta.

According to testimony in open court and police reports obtained by the Daily Press through a Freedom of Information Act request, Eric and Cronick did not get along and Cronick had previously made it clear Eric was not welcome on his property.

Cronick told Eric to leave his property the day of the shooting. In the ensuing argument, Eric slapped a phone out of Cronick's hands, which prompted Cronick to attack Eric. The other men who came to the property intervened and eventually the men separated.

Cronick then shot Eric in the abdomen.

"It looked like to me he was able to get away and actually retreated towards his residence, turned around, and went back towards Mr. Parrotta," Delta County Road Patrol Sergeant Mike Groleau said at the preliminary exam.

Prior to binding the case over to circuit court for a potential jury trial, District Court Judge Steven Parks reduced Cronick's bond from $250,000 to $75,000, citing his lack of criminal record and work history.
