The Rev. Canon Lydia Bucklin applies ashes to the head of LuAnn Hay during a noon-hour Ash Wednesday service at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Escanaba. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the the six weeks of penitence before Easter. To mark the day, many Christian believers attend services where their foreheads are marked with crosses made of the ashes from the previous Palm Sunday's palm fronds.
