MARQUETTE — Deliberation of Marquette Senior High School’s new nickname is expected to reach a resolution later this month.

Marquette’s Board of Education discussed 34 potential nicknames provided by the MSHS Student Advisory groups.

The following eight were approved: Cardinals, Hawks, Marauders, Reds, Redtail Hawks, Red Hawks, Red Jackets and Sentinels.

Another Marquette County district, Republic-Michigamme Schools, already uses the Hawk nickname; it is unknown if that will play a role in the ultimate decision of the MSHS school board.

Discussions will continue at at a board meeting on Tuesday with a final decision being made at another meeting on Jan. 22.

The following criteria will be considered: the ideal nickname would pay tribute to the unique aspects of the school district and community and the nickname cannot reference any protected class such as race, gender or religion.
