ESCANABA -- A Delta County man was arraigned in Delta County District Court Monday afternoon for allegedly shooting a man in the Flat Rock area over the weekend.

Jacob Chronick, age 28 of 8311 County Road 416 J Road, Cornell, is charged with one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder or by strangulation, after he allegedly shot Eric Parrotta Sunday. Parrotta was airlifted to UP Health Systems – Marquette, where he remains in stable condition.

A statement released by the Delta County Sheriff's Office indicated the shooting took place at a residence in Escanaba Township. Chronick's property on County Road 416 has a Cornell address but is located in Escanaba Township.

The felony charge Chronick faces carries a penalty of ten years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both. If the assault took place in a place of confinement, he may face an additional consecutive sentence.

During his arraignment hearing Monday, Chronick indicated he had hired Attorney Trent Stupak to represent him in the case. However, Stupak was not present at the 1 p.m. hearing, as he had a prior court appearance scheduled at the same time. 94th District County Magistrate Jeana LaCarte told Chronick during the hearing that the court was not in possession of any paperwork stating Stupak had been retained for the case and advised Chronick that he would need to ensure he had legal representation prior to Feb. 1, the date of his next court appearance.

The Feb. 1 date is that of a probable cause conference, which his closed to the public. Chronick's next appearance in open court will be a preliminary examination hearing on Feb. 8.

After Chronick's arrest Sunday, his bond was set at $350,000, cash or surety. During Monday's arraignment, that bond was reduced to $250,000, cash or surety, based on Chronick's prior record.

Whether or not Chronick posts bond and is released from the Delta County Jail, he was ordered Monday not to have contact with Parrotta and a number of other individuals, including a man who was identified as an eyewitness to the shooting. That individual, a family member of the victim, will likely be called to testify in subsequent hearings.

Chronick's primary concern during the hearing was whether or not the no contact order would prevent him from seeing his son during his scheduled parental time. His son was not named in the no contact order from the court, but the child's mother was. LaCarte advised Chronick to consult with his attorney on the issue.
