ESCANABA -- The Escanaba City Council approved purchasing garbage cans and setting public hearings for input on the city's budget during its regular meeting Thursday night.
The council unanimously approved the purchase of 832 garbage cans from Cascade Engineering, of Grand Rapids, for a price of $45,246. The decision to purchase the large number of cans was based on the city's ability to save on shipping costs.
"This is a little bit bigger order than we initially planned just to maximize that value," City Administrator Jim McNeil told the council.
Cascade offered the lowest bid on cans to restock the city's supply, and each of the new cans comes with a ten year warranty.
In addition, the council approved setting public hearings on the city's budget for Jan. 18, Feb. 15, and March 21. These hearings will be held during the council's regular meetings.
A special work session on the budget -- which gives the public a fourth opportunity weigh in on the budget and a chance to hear the council's priorities -- is set for Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. in the city council chambers.
