HOUGHTON — Two people suspected in the Dec. 18 murder of an 87-year-old Hancock Township man face charges in Houghton County.

Margaret Kempainen, 50, and Jacob Kempainen, 20, both of Hartland, Wis. are charged with open murder and conspiracy to commit open murder in the death of Alvin Kempainen, said Houghton County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Helmer.

The charges are punishable up to life in prison. Jacob Kempainen faces an additional felony firearm charge.

Helmer thanked multiple agencies who assisted with the case.

Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies found Alvin Kempainen’s body in his home at 53403 Salo Road while performing a well-being check on the morning of Dec. 19. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
